Let’s take a deeper look into what the Holy Spirit truly is and uncover its significance and role in the divine plan. The Holy Spirit is God's power in action, His active force. (Micah 3:8; Luke 1:35) God extends His spirit by directing His energy to any location to fulfill His purpose.—Psalm 104:30; 139:7 (Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, 2024)

Micah 3:8, As for me, I am filled with power by the spirit of Jehovah, And with justice and might, To tell to Jacob his revolt and to Israel his sin.” (Micah 3:8, New World Translation)

Luke 1:35, In answer the angel said to her: “Holy spirit will come upon you, and power of the Most High will overshadow you. And for that reason the one who is born will be called holy, God’s Son.’ ” (Luke 1:35, New World Translation)

Psalm 104:30, If you send out your spirit, they are created, And you renew the surface of the ground.” (Psalm 104:30, New World Translation)

Psalm 139:7, “Where can I escape from your spirit, And where can I run away from your face?” (Psalm 139:7, New World Translation)

In the Bible, the term "spirit" is derived from the Hebrew word ruʹach and the Greek word pneuʹma. These words most commonly refer to God’s active force, the Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:2) (Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, 2024)

Genesis 1:2, Now the earth was formless and desolate, and there was darkness upon the surface of the watery deep, and God’s active force was moving about over the surface of the waters. (Genesis 1:2, New World Translation)

However, the Bible also uses these terms in other contexts:

 1.) Breath

Habakkuk 2:19, “Woe to the one who says to a piece of wood, “Awake!” Or to a speechless stone, “Wake up! Instruct us!” Look! It is overlaid in gold and silver, And there is no breath at all within it.” (Habakkuk 2:19, New World Translation)

Revelations 13:15, “And it was permitted to give breath to the image of the wild beast, so that the image of the wild beast should both speak and cause to be killed all those who refuse to worship the image of the wild beast. (Revelations 13:15, New World Translation)

2.) Wind

Genesis 8:1, “But God gave attention to Noah and to all the wild animals and domestic animals that were with him in the ark, and God caused a wind to blow over the earth, and the waters began to subside.” (Genesis 8:1, New World Translation)

John 3:8, “The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from and where it is going. So it is with everyone who has been born from the spirit.” (John 3:8, New World Translation)

3.) The essential or life-sustaining force in living beings.

Job 34:14, 15, “If he fixes his attention on them, If he gathers their spirit and breath to himself, All humans would perish together, And mankind would return to the dust.” (Job 34:14,15, New World Translation)

pexels-technobulka-2909261.jpg

4.)  A person's mindset or demeanor.

Numbers 14:24, “But because my servant Caʹleb had a different spirit and kept following after me wholeheartedly, I will certainly bring him into the land where he went, and his offspring will take possession of it.” (Numbers 14:24, New World Translation)

5.) Spiritual beings, such as God and the angels.

1 Kings 22:21, “Then a spirit came forward and stood before Jehovah and said, ‘I will fool him.’ Jehovah asked him, ‘How will you do it?’” (1 Kings 22:21, New World Translation)

John 4:24, “God is a Spirit, and those worshipping him must worship with spirit and truth.” (John 4:24, New World Translation)

All of these meanings convey the idea of something unseen by humans that creates visible effects. In the same way, God's spirit, "like the wind, is invisible, immaterial, and powerful" (W. E. Vine, An Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words) (Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, 2024)

The Bible also refers to God’s holy spirit as his “hands” or “fingers.” (Psalm 8:3; 19:1; Luke 11:20; compare Matthew 12:28.) (Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, 2024)

Psalm 8:3, “When I see your heavens, the works of your fingers, The moon and the stars that you have prepared,…” (Psalm 8:3, New World Translation)

Psalm 19:1, “The heavens are declaring the glory of God; The skies above proclaim the work of his hands.” (Psalm 19:1, New World Translation)

Luke 11:20, “But if it is by means of God’s finger that I expel the demons, the Kingdom of God has really overtaken you.” (Luke 11:20, New World Translation)

Matthew 12:28, “But if it is by means of God’s spirit that I expel the demons, the Kingdom of God has really overtaken you.” (Matthew 12:28, New World Translation)

Just as a craftsman employs his hands and fingers to accomplish his tasks, God has utilized His spirit to bring about the following results:

1.) The Universe.

Psalm 33:6; “By the word of Jehovah the heavens were made, And by the spirit of his mouth everything in them.” (Psalm 33:6, New World Translation)

Isaiah 66:1, 2, This is what Jehovah says: “The heavens are my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Where, then, is the house that you could build for me, And where is my resting-place?” “My own hand has made all these things, And this is how they all came to be,” declares Jehovah.“ To this one, then, I will look, To the one humble and broken in spirit who trembles at my word.” (Isaiah 66:1,2, New World Translation)

2.) The Bible.

2 Peter 1:20, 21, "For you know this first, that no prophecy of Scripture springs from any private interpretation. For prophecy was at no time brought by man’s will, but men spoke from God as they were moved by holy spirit.” (2 Peter 1:20,21, New World Translation)

3.) The miraculous deeds carried out by His early servants and their enthusiastic preaching.

Luke 4:8, "Jehovah’s spirit is upon me, because he anointed me to declare good news to the poor. He sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and a recovery of sight to the blind, to send the crushed ones away free,…” (Luke 4:8, New World Translation)

Acts 1:8, "But you will receive power when the holy spirit comes upon you, and you will be witnesses of me in Jerusalem, in all Ju·deʹa and Sa·marʹi·a, and to the most distant part of the earth,…” (Acts 1:8, New World Translation)

1 Corinthians 12:4-11, "Now there are different gifts, but there is the same spirit; and there are different ministries, and yet there is the same Lord; and there are different activities, and yet it is the same God who performs them all in everyone. But the manifestation of the spirit is given to each one for a beneficial purpose. For to one is given speech of wisdom through the spirit, to another speech of knowledge according to the same spirit, to another faith by the same spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one spirit, to yet another operations of powerful works, to another prophesying, to another discernment of inspired expressions, to another different tongues, and to another interpretation of tongues. But all these operations are performed by the very same spirit, distributing to each one respectively just as it wills.” (1 Corinthians 12:4-11, New World Translation)

4.) The commendable qualities demonstrated by those who obey Him.

Galatians 5:22, 23, On the other hand, the fruitage of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22, 23, New World Translation)
